Peter Buchan also published a version in his Ancient Ballads and Songs of The North Of Scotland (Vol.2, , pp. , also Child I, 2D, p. 17). I must admit that I am very skeptical about this text. It doesn't sound right and it looks as if it was collated from different variants. This collection is primarily one of songs whose melodies have been adopted for pipe tunes. There are numerous other popular songs and tunes that fit the bagpipe but have never been particularly popular pipe tunes; also, there have been words written to many traditional pipe tunes long after the tune was played on the pipe.
Abercairny Highlanders, The. Angus Mackay Composer. March 2/4 Time Sig. 4 # of Parts. 16 # of Lines. Difficult Difficulty. This Angus MacKay competition march is one of the greatest — not easy, but a real favourite of mine. Commit to it for the long-term and it will get better for you with each passing year. He published the songs he had collected, along with pipe tunes, in his North Countrie Ballads. (80) He also wrote an essay on the 'Folk Songs of the North hast'. (81) His best-known compositions include a choral setting of 'The Tyke-Wake Dirge', which Holst admired, and a piano quintet, 'Among the Northumbrian Hills'.
Re: list of bagpipe tunes May I add that the smallpipes / highland pipes actually play in a mixolydian scale which is a major scale with a flat 7. So with "A" smallpipes, the most common key, they actually have the same key signature of D major because the G# is flatted. 🙂.
